Graduates from John A. Logan College’s Class of 2025 crossed the stage Saturday, May 17, during the college’s Fifty-Sixth Commencement ceremonies at the Donald L. Brewer Gymnasium and Convocation Center.
Due to severe weather concerns, the ceremonies were rescheduled from Friday and split into two sessions: a 9 a.m. ceremony for Associate in Arts, Science, Engineering Science, and Fine Arts degrees, and an 11:30 a.m. ceremony for Associate in Applied Science degrees and certificates.
Family and friends filled the gymnasium to celebrate the achievements of more than 1,200 graduates.
Among the highlights was the student address by Kaleigh Duncan of Carterville, who graduated with an Associate of Arts in Media Arts. Duncan was an active member of The Volunteer, the college’s student newspaper, serving as Visuals Editor in Fall 2024 and Editor-in-Chief in Spring 2025. She also participated in the Choir Club, led the Photojournalism Club as president, and worked in the Academic Affairs Office. In her speech, Duncan encouraged her fellow graduates to pursue fulfillment and gratitude over status or wealth. She plans to transfer to Southern Illinois University Carbondale to major in photography, supported by the Dean’s Transfer Scholarship.
The ceremonies also featured remarks from JALC President Dr. Kirk Overstreet, who thanked staff for their efforts in reorganizing the event, and Provost Dr. Stephanie Chaney Hartford, who acknowledged storm-impacted communities and honoring first responders.
