CARTERVILLE, Ill. — John A. Logan College opened its 2025 volleyball season with a 3-1 victory over Kaskaskia College on Thursday night, overcoming an early stumble to secure the win in front of a home crowd.

The Vols took the first set 25-18 before dropping the second 22-25. They regrouped behind steady play at the net and pulled out a close third set, 25-22, then sealed the match in dramatic fashion with a 27-25 finish in the fourth.

Sophomore outside hitter Karli Mann led Logan with 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage, while fellow sophomore Gabbi Burkard added 13 kills and five digs. Abby Compton chipped in seven kills, and setter Landre Hoehne recorded 22 assists and nine digs. Jacqueline Dill contributed 19 assists, and Ava Luebbers paced the defense with 12 digs.

The match was briefly halted when Burkard left the floor with a leg injury. She did not return, but walked off with the support of teammates and coaches to cheers from fans.

Afterward, head coach Bill Burnside said the Vols showed promise but still have areas to sharpen.

“At this point in the year it’s a lot of consistency issues,” Burnside said. “The serving really killed us in the game, we lost game two because of it. I think we played a good match, the team we played was very solid, but there are always things you can focus on and improve.”

Logan finished the night with 49 kills, nine aces, and seven blocks. The Vols continue their fall schedule later this month.
