SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Approximately 200 people gathered outside the Illinois State Capitol on Feb. 5 to protest as part of the 50501 movement, a grassroots group opposing actions taken by Elon Musk and the White House. Demonstrators voiced concerns over the Trump administration’s mass deportation policies, Musk’s access to the U.S. Treasury, and efforts to erase transgender people from legal recognition.
“We would like Donald Trump to step down or be removed from the presidency through impeachment and overturn executive orders that infringe on citizen and human rights,” said Jade, a 50501 media representative who declined to provide a last name. “We want to strengthen laws on hate speech and reinstate diversity, equity, and inclusion frameworks so that conditions are fair for all citizens.” No counterprotesters were seen at the demonstration, which took place during the state’s legislative session.
The 50501 movement—standing for 50 states, 50 protests, one day—formed in opposition to Trump’s second administration and has gained traction across social media. The group also seeks to raise awareness of and reject Project 2025, a policy plan crafted by The Heritage Foundation.
“Quite frankly, we want an investigation into the politicians appointed by Donald Trump,” Jade said. “And to take appropriate action if any federal or state laws have been violated by them or Elon Musk.” Jade closed the interview with a final message: “This is not a time to stand by idly. I urge you to use both logic and your heart to help create a better future.”
