Lang helps power Vols past Shawnee in doubleheader sweep

Logan shortstop says the Vols found their energy as the day went on

MARION, Ill. — John A. Logan College kept its hot streak going Saturday, sweeping Shawnee Community College at Mtn Dew Park and extending its winning streak to 12 games. Logan improved to 35-8 overall, 20-2 in conference play, 19-2 in division play and 20-2 in region play.

Justin Lang helped set the tone in the second game, going 3 for 5 with a home run, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in Logan’s 12-3 win. Hayden Bernreuter finished 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, Roman Sienza added a homer and three RBIs, and Carter Johnson also had three hits as the Vols pounded out 16 hits.

Batting in the leadoff spot, Lang said his approach stays simple.

“My approach kind of stays the same,” Lang said. “I just try to get on base, especially in that leadoff spot, because then I feel like I can steal second, and I’ve got guys behind me who can drive me in. I’m just trying to do my job.”

Lang said his biggest moment came on what he described as an inside-the-park home run.

“My biggest moment was the inside-the-park home run,” he said. “All the boys were hyped up, so I’d say that was the biggest moment for me today.”

He said the play came up before the game in a conversation with Logan coach Kyle Surprenant, better known around the program as “Soup.”

“Me and Soup talked about it before the game,” Lang said. “I was talking about hitting a homer soon, and he said an inside-the-parker might be the day today.”

Lang also said Logan had to build its edge as the day unfolded.

“The team’s energy was actually pretty bad starting the game, but we picked it up as the day went on, which was huge for us,” he said.

On the mound, Carter McKinney picked up the win in the 12-3 victory, and Logan’s bullpen closed the door from there. Dylan Mannino, Mason Beno and Eli Porter combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings as the Vols finished off the sweep.
